Running Y Ranch is tucked onto the shores of southern Oregon’s expansive Klamath Lake, the biggest natural lake in the Pacific Northwest. Your bird watching adventure will begin as soon as you approach The Lodge, which perches overlooking a forested valley full of wildlife and scenic beauty. And from here, you have many options, as it’s estimated that three-quarters of the waterfowl on the Pacific Flyway stop in the Klamath Basin surrounding Running Y Ranch each year.

American Bald Eagle – The Klamath Basin plays host to the largest gathering of wintering Bald Eagles in the continental US.
The abundance of unspoiled, protected lands surrounding The Ranch has made the area the most important gathering point for watching wild birds along the Pacific Flyway. Our location is also host to the largest gathering of wintering Bald Eagles in the continental U.S. Birders have sighted the American Bald Eagle, American White Pelican, Osprey, Canada Goose, Pintail, Mallard, Gadwall, Canvasback, Teal, Western & Eared Grebs, Black Tern, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret and the Snowy Egret.
The entire Klamath Basin is a place of incredible beauty, the kind that sneaks up on you, settles into your soul, and leaves you feeling the serenity and appreciation that only the most wild, undeveloped places can bring. As far as the eye can see are rolling hills, wetland marshes, grassy plains and mountain peaks—not to mention water, water everywhere. There are more lakes and marshes in the Klamath Basin that anywhere else in the state of Oregon, which is a primary reason this is such rich bird watching country.
Thousands of birding enthusiasts make the Klamath Basin a destination every year, and of course Running Y their base camp. There are six National Wildlife Refuges in the Klamath Basin, which serve as home to over 430 wildlife species including 263 species of birds.
